Chemo Session #10: Trouble in Portlandia
Encountered a few bumps in the road this week that were not so pleasant.
Tuesday evening my port began to bleed. Just a tiny little pin prick of a hole that when pressure was placed around or below it, caused a little rivulet of blood to seep out. I covered it with a big band aid and went to bed, hoping it would be ok in the morning. It hadn't bled more overnight, but when I put my numbing cream on the port about an hour before chemo was to start, it began bleeding again. Hells bells.
On my way to chemo, with Mom in tow, I edged into a low cement bike lane barrier that caused my front passenger tire to go flat. Lucky for us there were two good Samaritan's close by that were happy to help put on the spare. While Robert and Bobby secured the tire, trusty Angel Francine was able to come out as well, and once my car was ready, she and Mom followed me over to our friends, once again, at Casis Village Shell Station. (I've since exorcised the little bad luck tire goblins that followed Mom & Theresa from Kansas.) Francine then escorted us to Texas Oncology, and I was only thirty minutes off schedule at that point.
The nurses looked alarmed when they saw it and once again, had to use my arm veins for the infusion. Mom had to turn her chair around while they were examining the site. She appeased herself with a book while the nurses did their thing and was relieved and comforted to see what an amazing group of folks work at T.O. Pictures of my wound were sent off to Dr. Coombs-Skiles, and she immediately ordered port removal surgery for early the next morning. That surgery went well and as I sit typing this entry on Friday afternoon, I'm feeling pretty good, but a little bit concerned about the week ahead. Tuesday's lineup is blood work and an MRI and Wednesday morning I will have the new port installed on my left side and go right from there to chemotherapy. I'm just hoping everything goes smoothly and I'm able to stay on schedule. Only two more Taxol infusions before the four heavy duty administrations of A.C.
But the sun is out, Mom is settling in happily, and I'm going to focus on having a joyful weekend. Happy weekend to you as well!
